Our Aims
Dedicated To A Cohesive Community
The MEF is dedicated to building a cohesive community through education in the broadest sense, and through cooperation, informative dialogue, positive partnerships and projects which benefit both Muslim and non-Muslim people in Luton.
Our main aims are:
1. To promote improved relations between the Muslim and non-Muslim communities in Luton through education in the broadest sense.
2. Establish a forum which specialises in liaising positively with the education sector in relation to Muslim pupils needs and issues which affect them.
3. To encourage the active involvement and participation of Muslim parents in all aspects of their children’s education.
4. To establish a Muslim Teacher’s Network to provide opportunities for sharing best practice, creating resources, assisting schools and addressing the needs of Muslim pupils.
5. To address the specific needs of the Muslim youth and provide them with support, guidance and confidence-building activities in order to prevent the disengagement and alienation with mainstream British society.
In Luton, there are a number of pressing problems which we have identified, some particularly within the field of education:
- he relative educational underachievement of Pakistani and Bangladeshi Muslims leading to the disengagement of many students
- Insufficient provision of resources and guidance for teachers exploring issues of identity, community and affiliations
- Limited arenas available for open and honest political debate in relation to identity and diversity issues for young people
